Lauren grew up in Southern California and always wanted to move to a place where she could have land and animals. That became a reality when her and her husband of 27 years moved to the Spokane, Washington area and raised cattle. She moved to Vancouver in 2010 and today lives with two spoiled Pomeranians. She enjoys reading fiction on her Kindle (balances out time reading tax code) and working on home renovation projects with her husband (ask her about drywall installation!)

Our team of professionals has earned some of the most recognizable credentials in the industry.
We stay abreast of trends, laws, and developments with ongoing continuing education.
ITS is committed to life-long learning and the continual enhancements of our skills in order to better serve you, our valued clients.

What is a Certified Public Accountant?

The Certified Public Accountant, (CPA) credential is a license issued by one of the 55 states or territories of the U.S. that authorizes the holder to practice as a CPA in that jurisdiction. Licensing of CPAs helps to protect the public interest because only those individuals who have met prescribed requirements are permitted to identify themselves to the public as CPAs.

In order to become a CPA a candidate must have the following:

Education – A CPA must have a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree with a major or concentration in accounting before they qualify to take the CPA exam.

Exam  – The Uniform CPA Examination is a professional licensing examination used by all state accountancy boards to ensure CPA applicants possess at least a threshold mastery of technical knowledge needed to enter the CPA profession.

The exam is made up of four sections with each part being four hours long:

  • Auditing and Attestation
  • Business Environment and Concepts
  • Financial Accounting and Reporting
  • Regulation (including tax)

Experience – Qualifying experience must be obtained through working for a public accounting firm and/or employment in industry or government for a minimum of 12 months. The candidate’s experience must then be verified by a licensed CPA.

Once a person becomes a CPA, they must renew their license every 3 years and show proof of 120 hours
of board approved continuing education including a state ethics course.
