By Nicholas Rodenkirch, Johnson Bixby Intern
As I prepare to step into the corporate world, I find myself reflecting on the journey that has brought me here. Transitioning from the familiar environment of an academic setting to the structured realm of corporate life is both exhilarating and daunting. Through this experience, I have gained valuable insights that I believe will shape my future.
The value of connections
One of the most significant aspects of my college experience has been the connections I have made. Engaging with peers and professionals in my field has allowed me to reflect on what job might be the best fit for me. These interactions have opened my eyes to various career paths and provided me with a broader perspective on the financial planning industry. My school has provided numerous opportunities to meet professionals who are established in their careers. Connecting with other students who share my ambition toward financial planning has fostered a sense of community and support, making this transition feel less overwhelming.
Learning at Johnson Bixby
My internship at Johnson Bixby has been instrumental in my professional development. This experience has given me a firsthand look at the functions of a financial planning firm and the interconnectedness of its various roles. I have learned about the different positions within the firm and the skills necessary to succeed in each area. This exposure has not only equipped me with practical knowledge but has also prepared me to adapt to the new lifestyle that comes with working in a corporate environment.
Adjusting to corporate life
As I navigate this transition, I have gained a strong appreciation for the flexibility I enjoyed while in school. The ability to choose my schedule and the freedom to skip a class without serious repercussions are privileges I now recognize I took for granted. Adapting to the corporate lifestyle has proven to be a challenge, especially after spending so many years in an academic setting. While I am not yet tasked with high-stakes projects, I often find myself mentally exhausted by the end of the day. The daily tasks that once felt manageable during my college experience now seem overwhelming as I try to balance work with personal responsibilities. Staying active has been particularly difficult this summer. During school, I was accustomed to commuting by bike every day, which kept me energized. Now, with a car commute, I find it challenging to muster the energy to maintain an active lifestyle after work. Nevertheless, I have managed to create a functional schedule that allows me to prioritize my well-being. This experience has also deepened my respect for parents and others who juggle full-time jobs while maintaining a fulfilling life outside of work. Their ability to balance responsibilities is truly admirable.
Navigating anxiety about growing up
Reflecting on my childhood, I remember the excitement I felt about becoming an adult and embracing all the ‘grown-up’ responsibilities that come with it. However, as I inch closer to full adulthood, I often find myself longing for the simplicity of my grade school days. Conversations with older individuals frequently remind me to cherish my youth, and through these discussions, I have developed a newfound appreciation for the present moment. While it can be challenging to remain present in every situation, focusing on the here and now has allowed me to appreciate the little things in life. This mindfulness has become a valuable tool for managing the anxiety that sometimes accompanies the transition into adulthood.
Conclusion
The journey from college to corporate life is filled with challenges, self-discovery, and growth. By leveraging the connections I’ve made, the experiences I’ve gained, and the lessons I’ve learned about living in the present, I feel more prepared to embrace this new chapter. As I continue this path, I am reminded that every stage of life brings its unique challenges and rewards. While I may occasionally yearn for the simplicity of my school days, I am also excited about the opportunities and experiences that await me in the professional world. This transition may be daunting, but it is also a chance to grow, learn, and thrive in ways I never imagined.
