While internships add value to a young professional’s resumé and open possibilities for full time career opportunities, they can offer immense benefits for one’s professional development. Internships are a fantastic way for students to develop professional skills and insight. By bridging the gap between the academic world and the real world, internships allow students to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world scenarios. Most importantly, firsthand experience is crucial for developing industry specific skills and knowledge.
Internships are also a great outlet for students to develop their professional networks. Interns have a chance to work with and learn from experienced professionals, gaining knowledge that otherwise would not be available in a classroom setting. Another important impact internships have on professional development is clarifying career goals. By allowing interns to experience different roles within a company, they can assess whether the career path or industry aligns with their long-term aspirations.
The value of soft skills in the workplace
I’ve learned that in any professional setting soft skills like communication, teamwork, and problem solving are critical to have in any role. Learning the nuances of soft skills can enhance the ability to work seamlessly in a professional environment. While technical skills are important, soft skills lay the foundation for success. Team members who have strong soft skills are better equipped to work effectively with others by communicating clearly, building relationships, and working in teams. Team members with strong soft skills are also better fit for leadership roles as they can adapt to change, solve problems, and motivate colleagues. Professionals can start developing soft skills early in their careers by gaining experience through internships.
How my internship has shaped my future career goals
My experience as an intern at Johnson Bixby has been invaluable and one that I will never forget. Through talking with the different members of the Johnson Bixby team and engaging in day-to-day responsibilities, I have gained a clear understanding of my own career goals. The financial planning industry can be an ambiguous and daunting career to enter as there are a wide array of pathways you can take. My time here has helped me navigate my way through the industry and discover what I am most passionate about. Most importantly, Johnson Bixby has helped me understand what I want in a firm and the values I would like to see reflected in my work. The culture that has been cultivated at Johnson Bixby sets the bar high for future employers and I strive to carry these core values with me wherever I go next in my career.
